The Use of Energy-Saving Technologies Has Significantly Increased

The use of energy-saving technologies has increased significantly this year. Summarizing the works carried out in 2016, Hayk Harutyunyan, the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Energy Infrastructures and Natural Resources said.

According to the Deputy Minister, the import of LED lamps has increased by 20 times. Particularly, 1 million 550 thousand energy-saving bulbs were imported in 2016 while around 76 thousand energy-saving bulbs in 2015. The import of  Solar photovoltaic panels increased by 3-4 times. The same is in solar water heating industry.

I am confident that these parameters will be exceeded sharply next year. Such a confidence is based on the contacts with the private sector, Hayk Harutyunyan said.

Just only «Grand Sport» group plans to install a solar water heating system until May this year, which will be the biggest not only in Armenia, but in the region.

Solar Power Plants Construction Project to be presented in Investment Forum

Prior to announcing an international construction tender for a photovoltaic solar stations of industrial importance in Armenia the Investment Forum will be held within “Energy Week” events in Yerevan on January 25-27. The goal of the forum is to discuss possibilities to attract investors for the construction of the solar stations. The active participation of foreign and local investors, international financial organizations is expected.

At the end of last year the Government of the Republic of Armenia approved the investment project for the construction of photovoltaic solar stations, the total investment cost of which is estimated about $129 million. Within the project, it is planned to build stations of industrial importance with a capacity of up to 110 MW in various regions of Armenia.

Spanish “Aries engineering” consulting company has already done and presented a technical-economic study for 2 of 6 selected sites for the construction of solar power plants. They refer to “Masrik” and “Dashtadem” sites of the administrative borders of the provinces of Gegharkunik and Aragatsotn.

It is planned to announce an international tender in February. One of the main conditions of the tender will be the offered price. In other words, the advantage will be given to the minimum tariff proposal.

Promoting Energy Efficiency Will Help to Reduce Volume of Imported Fuel

As a result of implementing second phase activities of the Energy Efficiency Action Plan it is expected to provide 37 percent primary energy savings till 2020. According to Vahagn Atayan, the head of energy efficiency and technical normative division of energy department of the ministry of Energy Infrastructures and Natural Resources, the expected energy savings target index is almost 40 billion kWh in 2010-2020.

‘The average cost for 1 kWh electricity saved as a result of energy saving activities in public buildings costs, in SMEs and in the field of transport and utility services is up to 1-4 US cents, while the average cost of 1 kWh electricity produced in Armenia’s energy systemis almost 7 US cents. This means that for Armenia’s economy it is more affordable to implement activities aimed to improve energy saving and efficiency, than increase of new generating capacities’.

Today about 67 percent of the primary energy carriers consumed in Armenia is imported, which makes energy security vulnerable. Promoting energy efficiency will reduce primary energy demand and will lead to a reduction in the volume of imported fuel.

‘The energy saving and energy efficiency activities aimed at reducing energy consumption. As a result, energy production efficiency will improve, which will have a positive impact on the formation of prices’, said Mr. Atayan.

Floating Paris gym uses human energy to sail down the Seine River

Imagine your gym workout didn’t just fuel your day, but also helped fuel a boat down a river.

Well, this is the idea behind the floating gym, designed by Italian architects Carlo Ratti Associati.

The Paris Navigating Gym will be powered down the Seine River by human energy, as people exercise.

The glass bubble design ensures that gym-goers get a good look at the Eiffel Tower as they toil away.

The “human-powered Gym Boat” is 20 metres long, and can hold up to 45 people. It features bikes and cross trainers, and displays realtime information about the Seine’s environmental conditions.

The exercise machines are linked to an inverter, which convert the pedal power into electricity. This energy powers the device, and the energy generated by the system (machine and user) then power the gym boat. Like this:

Mark Ruffalo Delivers Mobile Solar Trailers to Standing Rock Camps in Preparation for Harsh Winter

Cannon Ball, ND – In a show of kindness and solidarity with the Standing Rock Sioux, actor Mark Ruffalo and Native Renewables founder Wahleah Johns presented Sioux tribal elders with mobile trailers equipped with solar collection arrays. The trailers provide a clean energy source for the protest encampment where over 500 Native American tribes have taken a stand against the Dakota Access Pipeline in the largest gathering of American Indians in modern history.

“This pipeline is a black snake that traverses four states and 200 waterways with fracked Bakken oil,” said Ruffalo, co-founder of The Solutions Project, a venture that works to transition society to clean and renewable energy.

“We know from experience that pipelines leak, explode, pollute and poison land and water. But it doesn’t have to be that way.”

The City Of Las Vegas Is Now Powered Entirely By Renewable Energy

All Las Vegas city facilities ― from government buildings to streetlights ― are now running entirely on renewable energy, city officials have announced.

“We can brag that the city, this city of Las Vegas, is one of the few cities in the entire world that can boast using all of its power from a green source,” Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman said in a news conference Monday.

The achievement marks the completion of the city’s nearly decade-long goal to fully transition to clean energy only ― a project that was expedited after the city partnered with public utility company NV Energy almost a year ago. While all government facilities are now only powered by renewable energy, many residential and commercial buildings are not.

Officials were able to make the announcement after Boulder Solar 1, a massive solar array in the southeast corner of Nevada, went on line last week.

Boulder Solar 1, combined with other local sources of green energy like geothermal energy plants and solar panels placed throughout the city, will now provide 100 percent of the city’s municipal power. The facility is owned by energy provider Southern Power and creates electricity bought by NV Energy and used by the city to power government services.

The shift to renewable energy started in 2008 and has since saved the city roughly $5 million annually and decreased energy consumption by more than 30 percent, reports the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Las Vegas ― now the largest U.S. city to rely solely on renewable energy ― is helping pave the way for other cities eager to transition to carbon-free energy, despite an incoming presidential administration with a record of pushing back on progressive environmental policies.

Last month, 48 mayors signed an open letter to President-elect Donald Trump, pledging to take climate action within their cities even if the federal government refuses to support their plans.

The letter reads:

Each of our cities is committing to ambitious targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, set climate action, regularly report on our progress, share lessons and hold each other accountable. …

As President, you will have the power to expand and accelerate these local initiatives which the people resoundingly supported. …

We ask that you lead us in expanding the renewable energy sources we need to achieve energy security, address climate change and spark a new manufacturing, energy and construction boom in America.

San Francisco; San Jose, California; and Grand Rapids, Michigan are just a few of the big cities committing to use 100 percent renewable energy by 2035.

UN House in Armenia to use solar energy

The solar energy on each square meter in Armenia, according to an expert assessment, is equal to one barrel of oil. This huge solar energy potential in the country can be utilized by using the solar photovoltaic (PV) technology. As long as there is sun, the PV energy is inexhaustible and is the best renewable natural energy resource. However, the cost of PV panels is high, and Armenia is not yet rich enough to benefit from this natural gift.

This is why very few yet use the solar energy available in Armenia. On October 24, within the framework of the events marking the 66th anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations, the UN office in Armenia launched a project under which its house in Yerevan will use solar power.

“Today we make a small but important step – we are announcing that from now on the UN House in Armenia will operate on solar power from the panels located on its roof. Solar power is environmentally-friendly and ecologically clean, and we hope that our example will encourage others to follow. This project will contribute to reducing UN carbon footprint and promote green economy,” said Dafina Gercheva, UN Resident Coordinator/UNDP Resident Representative in Armenia.

The solar panels are connected to the grid and thus swap the generated but not used electricity, under net-metering concept. This means that the electricity generated is not sold, rather than used for the internal purposes, covering around 3.1 percent of energy consumed by the entire UN House and 8.4 percent of UNDP.

“The solar panels project will serve as a powerful policy impact and “green” advertisement tool, which hopefully will contribute towards overcoming some of the legal and regulatory barriers to installing and using PV solar panels for commercial purposes,” said Hovhannes Sarajyan, Communication associate at UNDP Armenia.

According to a film prepared by the UNDP, the method of using thermal power in Armenia is applied by very few buildings/organizations. Among the pioneers of using this method in Armenia is the American University of Armenia (AUA) where solar energy is, for instance, put to use for air-conditioning rooms.

“There are very few trends in the world that have a potential of growing thousand-fold and for a small country like Armenia an opportunity is provided to become one of the advocates of this trend and a player on the world scale. In some 10-20 years competition in this sector will grow so much that Armenia will not be able to enter the market,” says AUA Engineering Research Center Associate Director Artak Hambarian.

Meanwhile, the state plans to develop this direction when China starts to produce solar panels and the cost of the method goes down.

“Different approaches [to using solar energy] are used in the world, mostly it is done due to state subsidy, but let’s get it right: now our state has no such possibility, therefore this sphere is left to market relations and consumer choice,” says Levon Vardanyan, head of the Development Department at the Energy and Natural Resources Ministry of Armenia.
